About Mothering

"No one is more inexperienced than a new mother"

"On finding out you're pregnant, you tell yourself that after carrying a child inside you for nine months you'll be prepared to be a perfect mommy. But as your abdomen swells (and your feet, your hands, and your hips), you approach your due date with the sinking feeling that you're no more ready to be a mother than you were nine months -- or nine years -- ago. The little person inside your womb seems somehow unreal, no matter how hard he kicks and squirms. You want to be a good mother, but you begin to wonder whether you will be.

"As if the self-doubts aren't enough, you're assaulted on all sides by unasked-for advice. The reason for this is that, as insecure and anxious to learn as the new mother is, there is no one more eager to dispense advice than the experienced one. And she really does have a lot to give. The problem is that the experienced mom usually isn't around when she's needed. She casts her pearls at the most inopportune moments: at the grocery store, at social gatherings when you really wanted to forget about diapers and feedings for a change; or in a phone call just as you were about to fit in a nap. Too, the manner and frequency with which she gives counsel often puts the sensitive new mother on her defense. The question is how to get adviser and advisee together in such a way that the new mother can really use the advice."

We hope this Parent Mentoring Program will help.
